During April 10th to 12th , 2018, the first symposium on polar cryospheric sciences for early career scientists in China was held in the State Key Laboratory of the Cryospheric Science (SKLCS), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Lanzhou, China. This symposium was sponsored by the Polar Cryospheric Science Branch (PCSB) of the Chinese Society of Cryospheric Science (CSCS), and organized by the SKLCS. More than 40 polar scientists and related students from all over China joined this meeting. Chuanjin Li from the SKLCS, YuandeYang from the Wuhan University, Lei Geng from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and Xichen Li from the Atmospheric Physics Institute, CAS were invited to host the symposium jointly. The leader of the SKLCS, Professor Shichang Kang made a brief introduction of the SKLCS and talked about the plans on setting field monitoring sites for cryospheric observations in Arctic. Kang also gave an invited presentation named as “Crossing-border transmission of atmospheric pollutants and its influences on cryospheric change in Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau”. The other invited talk was presented by Professor Cunde Xiao from the Beijing Normal University, and the presentation was named as “The three-Pole international Plan and the cryospheric science in China”.
For other presentations, Zhongyong Gao from the Third Institute of Oceanography (TIO), State Oceanic Administration (SOA) talked about the carbon sink in polar oceans and its biogeochemical cycles, Lei Geng presented the talk about atmospheric oxidation capability records in polar ice cores, Jianbin Huang from the Qinghua University talked about the simulating results on Antarctic climate with WRF model, Xichen Li talked about the decadal variability of the climate system and its influences on Antarctic sea ice and glaciers, Qi Shu from the First Institute of Oceanography (FIO), SOA presented their modeling results on Arctic sea ice with climate models and also the forecasting outputs, Guitao Shi from the Polar Research Institute of China gave us a talk about the post-depositional effects and their influences on the N and O isotopes in Antarctic deposited snow, Hongxi Pang from the Nanjing University talked about δ17O in Antarctic snow, Yuande Yang from presented the monitoring results on glacier movements in eastern Antarctica, Tingfeng Dou from the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), Yulan Zhang and Chuanjin Li from SKLCS gave their presentations about the environments changes in Arctic. After the presentation section, the participants talked about strengthening cooperation among different apartments in China and sharing the analyzing machines and published data.
The participants also talked about setting an annual routine symposium mechanism among the young polar scientists in China and organizing the Chinese association on polar researches for the young scientists in China. The symposium decided to connect with the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) and started the application procedures for joining the APECS.
